I2S, also called IIS, stands for “Inter-IC Sound.” It is a standard used for communicating digital audio signals over short distances, such as between chips on a circuit board or between closely-located circuit boards. It is not designed for transmitting digital audio between chassis or over longer distances, like the SPDIF or AES/EBU standards.
